I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality.
"I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality."
- Frida Kahlo
Growing up my parents always made sure that we were aware of our culture. And they always reminded us that we should be proud of it because it's beautiful and part of who we are. One of the things I remember more vividly was learning about Frida Kahlo! I always thought she was beautiful! She wasn't this standard beauty of what society had led us to believe should be beautiful. And that's one of the things I liked the most. I was this little chubby Latina girl in a world of skinny white girls, so for me it was comforting to see this unconventional beauty. Her art was always aesthetically pleasing to me. And I admired the vibrant colors, even paired with sorrowful imagery. I wanted to be part of that world.
So I wanted to dedicate this post to her!
This look is inspired by the beautiful Frida Kahlo, as well as a photo of Denise Bidot. The floral crown is what made me think of Frida. However, I am unable to part my hair down the middle, as Frida did so often. So I opted for the styling of Miss Bidot.
Floral crowns, braids, and punchy makeup. It's like a painting itself.
My muses:
Frida Kahlo
Denise Bidot
Here are some photos of myself, as well as a tutorial!
Here's one with more of a punchy lip. I then changed it to a lilac color. Now with the lilac lips!
And for the tutorial:
